The Steelwood Chapel holds services each Sunday at 11AM. In 2009, weekly contributions to the chapel added up to donations made to Eye Angels, Catholic Social Services, Centro Medico Familiar, Salvation Army, Wilmer Hall and Child Advocacy. The Chapel keeps a prayer list and special mention is made of those on the list each Sunday.

Golf Course Conditions Generally the condition of the golf course is good as we head into the winter months. The exceptions are the # 5 & # 9 greens and the putting green. This year has been a challenge due to the large amount of rainfall we have experienced. The problem has been too much moisture combined with a disease in the roots which thrives in excessively moist conditions. The disease, Bermuda Grass Decline, attacks the root system when the root zone stays wet. This disease has been a challenge for several years, and the overly wet conditions have magnified the problem. We are consulting experts in the field to help us better manage this problem. A consultant from the USGA will be onsite to review our plans for the winter months and the important recovery months in the spring. We at Steelwood operate on the philosophy that our members deserve the best. You will notice there are several projects ongoing to improve your golfing experience. We are clearing the areas along the waters edge bordering the lake to improve air flow and the overall aesthetic. There are numerous trees slated for removal to also help with air flow and sunlight to aid in better turf quality. Summary: The course is in very good condition despite a few problems with the greens, so come out and enjoy one of the finest courses in the area. I will continue to provide updates to the membership on the course condition.

WHAT TYPE OF COURTS DOES STEELWOOD HAVE?

The Hydro Courts are soft surfaced and have sub-surface

irrigation that pull and displace water. They are gentle on the

joints and reduce downtime after rain. There are lights on the

courts for evening play.

FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING TENNIS?

I've been playing tennis for more than 40 years.

FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING?

I started teaching 30 years ago at the University of Alabama.

Since then I have taught at the University of South Alabama,

the Country Club of Mobile and Heron Lakes Country Club. I

coached a State Championship team at UMS/Wright.

DO YOU HAVE A PHILOSOPHY OF TENNIS?

My philosophy on tennis is that tennis can be enjoyed by

anyone who can hold a racquet and is a game for the ages.

HOW DO YOU TAILOR INSTRUCTION TO YOUR STUDENTS' NEEDS?

I try and determine a player's ability by recognizing their

strengths and weaknesses. Using that strategy to enhance the

players own strength and exploiting their opponent's

weaknesses to their advantage will lead to winning more points

and games.

WHAT ARE A FEW OF THE MYTHS ABOUT PLAYING TENNIS?

There are not a lot of myths in tennis. There have been very few

changes in hundreds of year of tennis. You do not have to wear

all white anymore and both feet can leave the ground during a

serve - a feat easier said than done. I would encourage

everyone to find out if they are a baseliner, a volleyer or an all

court player and hone their skills accordingly.

Quail Hunting

As you might expect in this part of the country, hunting is an integral part of the Steelwood experience. The season, from October through February, offers ample opportunities to bag your limit. Daily quail hunting and scheduled pheasant hunts are both offered.

Steelwood hunts are enjoyed by experienced hunters and novices alike, whether it's a first hunt with your family, providing an unforgettable experience for clients, or a day to network with business associates and friends who enjoy the excitement of wing shooting.

At Steelwood, you can expect the finest guides and only well-trained dogs.

Birders love Steelwood. The pine forests and natural waterways provide excellent habitats right on the property and many different species visit all year round.

Some of the most colorful resident breeding birds include the Orchard Oriole, Eastern Towhee, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, and Eastern Bluebird. Our neighborhoods are filled with the delightful musical calls of the Carolina Wren, Tufted Titmouse and Pine Warbler. Even the elusive Wood Thrush adds its voice to the chorus.
